Planning

The Planning Department assists in developing the community to its greatest potential. In many ways, the Planning Department aids in the responsible growth and maintenance of the City.

Together with the Planning Commission, the Planning Department ensures that the City progresses toward its goals as prescribed in the City’s General Plan.

The Planning Department provides services that include:

  • Site Plan Review
  • Conditional Use Permits
  • Variances
  • Zone Changes
  • General Plan Amendments
  • Environmental Review
  • Subdivision Processing
  • Tentative and Final Maps

The Planning Department also administers Calipatria’s CDBG Program. The City’s CDBG Program began in the early 1980s. The Program provides low interest loans to low income-qualified homeowners.

The City’s CDBG Program assists the community in rehabilitating low-income housing and assists local businesses from start up to expansion. CDBG stands for Community Development Block Grant. The federal government gives the State of California funds to rehabilitate its communities. The State Housing and Community Development Department then redirects the funding to local jurisdictions. The City of Calipatria has had a CDBG Program since the early 1980s. The City’s Program allows for low-interest loans for housing rehabilitation to low income, qualified homeowners. Our CDBG Program also has a first time homebuyer program to assist qualified applicants with gap financing for the purchase of a qualified home.

The General Plan is like the City’s constitution because it outlines how land is used. It also sets the City’s goals and objectives for planning its future. There are seven elements to the City’s General Plan: Land Use, Circulation, Housing, Conservation, Open Space, Noise, and Safety.
Since its incorporation, the City of Calipatria has had a rich, eighty-three-year-old history and has developed as a semi-rural community with farming as its major industry.

The City of Calipatria is an exciting gateway for NAFTA and is ideally situated within an ever-growing corridor of commerce between Los Angeles and Mexico. Calipatria has excellent transportation opportunities and a projected growth that makes it the premier place to do business.
